Want to know a little more about the team of accountants at Roger Smallman & Co Ltd? Here we’ve jotted down a few profiles on our friendly, close-knit team of professionals.
Roger is an award-winning (cycling proficiency 1953) accountant and has been in the profession since he left school in 1962. He trained for five years with a Southampton accountant and when his articles were finished, in 1967, he went to London to work. He spent a couple of years with a London firm of accountants and then, when he qualified (hurrah) he began working in hotels. He started with a period at Trust House Forte and ended up as chief accountant at The Dorchester, Park Lane, London.
In 1976 he got fed up with commuting an hour and a half to work each way and came back to Southampton. He joined a partnership, which ended in 1980. He then spent some time as the manager of a Southampton firm of accountants. In 1985, he took the step which placed him behind the desk he has been at ever since, as owner/director of his own business.
Roger lives on the edge of the New Forest with his wife and step-daughter. He also has two sons who work in London and a step-son who is currently living in Cambodia. The household also includes four horses, two dogs, one cat and a fish. Roger enjoys walking the dogs in the forest, reading, bird watching and hates mowing the lawn.
Carole studied full time for her accountancy degree in Southampton, from 1993-1996. During this time she worked part time at Roger Smallman & Co. Once she graduated she joined the team full time. She then went on to complete her ACCA qualifications. More recently she became a chartered accountant (ACA), gaining her practicing certificate and becoming a Director at the firm.
When she isn’t working she spends time with her husband and two small boys. Carole also enjoys baking and cake decorating, and has become the “go-to” cake designer for her friends and family. She even entered in items to be shown at Cake International.
Laura has been working for Roger Smallman & Co since 2011. She is currently training to become a Chartered Accountant (ACA). In her free time, she can be found riding her horse or walking her two whippets.
Sally joined Roger Smallman & Co in 1999, and has been preparing accounts ever since. Her other roles in the office include Bookkeeping and VAT preparation, and has since become AAT qualified. She's part of the furniture!
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her three children (despite it constantly involving tidying up after her twins), listening to music and sunbathing. Sally is also a keen swimmer, enjoys going to the gym and occasionally attempting a little bit of DIY.
Becky joined Roger Smallman & Co in 2011. She is AAT qualified and is now training for her ACA status. When not at work she enjoys dancing and netball. At the moment, she is about to take a one year sabbatical from the company to do some volunteer work in Birmingham, combining her love of youth work with her passion for dance. We’re going to miss her!
Jenny is our AAT qualified bookkeeper. She started working for Roger Smallman & Co in 2008. For several years she worked “behind the scenes” from home, but recently she has increased her hours and can now be found in the office three days a week.
She is currently continuing her AAT studies. In her spare time, Jenny enjoys photography and her daughter is a reluctant model. She also likes live music and comedy. The Isle of Wight festival is a favourite destination, and this year she managed to take her son, in his wheelchair.
Brenda has been part of Roger’s team for more than 20 years. She enjoys working in such a friendly, family-like atmosphere and believes that our clients benefit from our personal touch.
Claire previously worked as an Office Clerk for an Insurance Company for 10 years, including balancing financial accounts and working on the cash department to balance he books. She went on to work part-time at her partner's construction business, acting as their secretary and bookkeeper and remains there whilst taking on a new challenge with us.
In her spare time, Claire enjoys spending time with her family and listening to music. She also enjoys keeping herself fit, going to classes at the gym regularly and walking her dog.
Victoria has over 20 years of business experience behind her before joining our company. For the last 13 years, she has carried out various roles at IBM, before taking a career break to concentrate on raising her two children. However, she's back and ready to start a new journey with us.
Outside of work, Victoria is a keen gardener and cook which keeps her occupied around the house. To get some peace and quiet, she enjoys playing badminton to keep herself active.
Talia joined us in 2014, keeping up to date with our social media pages and creating our newsletters, whilst studing at university and juggling numerous other jobs. Since then, she's graduated in Sports Journalism earlier this year and is now learning the basics of accounting.
Away from the office, Talia enjoys anything sports-related and is a National Cheerleader competing across the country. She also keeps up with her journalism work as a freelance and does anything to avoid the kitchen!
